    German learners who enjoy reading a good book can benefit greatly from reading German literature. Reading books in a foreign language is a natural and fun way of improving vocabulary and phraseology but also learning about the history and culture of the nation whose language you are trying to learn. Progressive education is a pedagogical movement that began in the late nineteenth century; it has persisted in various forms to the present. The term progressive was engaged to distinguish this education from the traditional Euro-American curricula of the 19th century, which was rooted in classical preparation for the university and strongly differentiated by social class.

      The basic lessons (Level II) of this textbook are set up to first introduce the parts of speech, and then bring in the rules that govern these. Pay particular attention to both word endings and sentence word order as you progress in learning the German language. Following is a short conversation piece (Gespräch). Play the audio file first. In this lesson, students read three stories that use the simple present and present progressive in context. They answer comprehension questions and respond to questions about themselves using the simple present and present progressive.
